Olive oil from the Deortegas oil mill in Yecla (Murcia)
At Deortegas, Extra Virgin Olive Oils are the result of a fresh and healthy combination of ideas and illusions, of intense work and respect for Mother Nature.
Deortegas - organic olive oil by conviction
Just over an hour's drive from the coast, the family business Deortegas S.L. is located in the middle of a beautiful piece of nature near the village of Yecla, which belongs to the Spanish province of Murcia. In the rural area, apart from the olive trees, there are grain fields, almond trees and vineyards. At an altitude of only 600 meters above sea level, the olives thrive in warm to hot summers and moderate temperatures in winter. Deortegas can therefore come up with five different types of olives, all of which are cultivated with a lot of love, commitment and respect for nature. This is how the delicious organic extra virgin olive oil can be created, which suits every palate.
After the family had been dedicated to organic olive cultivation for more than 30 years, Marcelo Ortega and Rafaela Ortega founded their own oil mill in 2008. To this day, they fulfill their claim to produce an excellent and healthy olive oil with flying colours. They are inspired by traditional methods. They are always shaped by the love for the product and never neglect the consideration for the environment. Five single-variety olive oils and a wonderful coupage are the irresistible result that national and international olive oil lovers look forward to every year.
This is how the healthy Deortegas organic oil is made
Because it is a small business, at Deortegas all steps from the care of the olive trees to the preparation of the unique olive juice are in the hands of the family business. As a result, not only are the trees cared for with great care, but the ecological aspect is also very important.
In order not only to do justice to organic cultivation, but also to perfect it through sustainable agriculture, Deortegas also uses all by-products that arise during cultivation and oil extraction:
- Olive pomace from the oil mill as well as leaf waste and cattle manure are used as compost.
- The olive pits form a biofuel to maintain the temperatures of the plant in the oil mill.
- Fallen olive leaves are used as cattle feed.
- Waste from pruning the olive trees is shredded and used as fertilizer.
Once the olives have reached their ideal ripeness by mid-October, they are carefully harvested. Only fruits that were taken directly from the tree are used for processing. Picking it up from the ground is taboo. This ensures the top quality of the olives, which is reflected in the wonderfully fruity taste of the finished olive oil.
In order to preserve all the aromas and healthy ingredients of the fruit, Deortegas meticulously ensures that the maximum temperature of 27 degrees is never exceeded in all olive oil production processes. With a lot of diligence and commitment, five cold-pressed extra virgin olive oils are created, all of which inspire with a variety of perfectly balanced taste and smell nuances.
Top marks from all over the world for Deortegas
Of course, with so much loving and responsible work, national and international recognition is inevitable. It is therefore not surprising that Deortegas olive oils continue to win first prizes in the most diverse olive oil competitions. If one type of olive from the family business does not quite make it onto the podium, the olive oil from another gets the highest number of points. In the last four years alone, the extra virgin olive oils have won the following awards:
